The wait is over, well, almost. Gran Turismo 5 is nearly here, and creator Kazunori Yamauchi says that people can get their expectations up looking forward to the game. We recently sat down with Kazunori, and he explained that the painfully long gestation of the latest Gran Turismo iteration—it’s been 5 years in the making—is due to a number of factors. The increase in hardware capability from the Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 meant that there were higher expectations in terms of graphics, gameplay, and physics realism, all of which increase the complexity of the game design. This also required the Sony programmers to throw out most of the old legacy code that the previous Gran Turimso games were based on and pretty much start from scratch. The good news, we’re told, it that this means Gran Turismo 6 won’t take nearly as long to develop since it will be based on the new platform.
Kazunori Yamauchi recently drove in the 24-hour race at the Nurburging (and posted the fastest lap time on his team), and plans on taking part in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. He told us that during the Nurburgring race he stopped thinking about driving and started to act instinctually as an integrated part of the car. That feeling of total immersion is something he wants to bring to the video game in the future. But if you’re looking for a list features that will be in the next next Gran Turismo, though, you’ll have to be patient. Once GT5 is released, Sony will look at the game and see what sort of improvements players want.
