1990 Mustang GT RealSpeed - Research And Destroy
1990 Mustang GT RealSpeed - Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Magazine
Dan Carlson Uses His 240,000-Mile ‘90 Mustang GT For Research And Development, And Destroys The Competition With His Daily Driver.

Once the combination was in place, it was time to put a tune in the car. This would be the key to its performance as a daily driver. Dan strapped his Stang to the Mustang Dyno at Realspeed and set his baseline. To keep the fuel under control, a 255-gph high-pressure, in-tank, fuel pump, along with a T-rex in-line pump feeds fuel through the stock lines to a set of 60 pound injectors. A Crane Hi-6R ignition box supplies spark to the NGK plugs via a stock distributor and Moroso wires. The final result of Dan’s street tune is 525 hp at the rear hides. With racing on the brain, he headed to the dragstrip to see just how well his new combination would perform. After a few warm up passes, Dan launched his R&D rocket to a best elapsed time of 10.46-seconds at 132 mph. This is pretty impressive considering the car was driven to and from the track and gets 17 mpg. “I could easily make it a 9-second car,” Dan tells us. “It’s a street car, I drive it everywhere. I don’t see the point in cutting it up or making it a trailer queen. I have too much fun driving it.”

The G-POWER TYPHOON has arrived! With its breathtaking wide-stance styling, its 525-hp / 386-kW G-POWER SK III eight-cylinder supercharged engine and a top speed of 275 km/h the SUV based on the BMW X5 (E70) sets new standards in its class.

Muscular fender flares and strikingly styled aprons and spoilers front and back, all designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, dominate the appearance of the G-POWER TYPHOON. The body conversion components and the tools to make them were developed by the G-POWER designers using the latest CAD technologies. The entire base car was scanned in-house using a 3D scanner. The TYPHOON components are manufactured in OEM quality from PUR-R-Rim plastics.

The curved G-POWER fender flares on front and rear axle come complete with matching fender liners and add seven centimeters to the width of the X5. They create the space necessary for extra-wide wheels and tires. The largest version features G-POWER Silverstone Forged Edition forged wheels in size 11Jx23 in front and in size 12Jx23 on the rear axle. These wheels were custom-developed for the TYPHOON. High-performance tires in size 315/25 ZR 23 front and back from development partner Michelin provide optimal traction and sporty handling.

The G-POWER TYPHOON front apron dominates the face of the exclusive SUV aided by the wider fenders. Large air ducts not only improve the vehicle’s passing clout, they also optimize cooling of engine and front brakes. Its sophisticated shape also reduces aerodynamic lift on the front axle. Like its counterpart in the front the TYPHOON rear apron was designed to replace the production bumper in its entirety.

The rear appearance is characterized by the two tailpipes of the stainless-steel G-POWER sport rear muffler, each measuring 114 mm in diameter, and by the rear diffuser. In combination with the rear spoiler attached to the liftgate the diffuser reduces lift on the rear axle. The rear spoiler also stretches the vehicle’s roofline visually. The TYPHOON rocker panels create an aerodynamically favorable transition between front and rear fender flares. They also feature five blue LED lights each, integrated into their undersides, which are activated by the vehicle’s keyless fob or by pulling on a door handle. They illuminate the ground on either side of the vehicle. The tops of the rocker panels feature integrated stainless-steel inserts with blue illuminated G-POWER logo. Another example for the sophistication of the G-POWER TYPHOON version for the BMW X5 is the four-piece underbody paneling.

Befitting its dynamic appearance G-POWER offers a very powerful engine for the BMW X5 xDrive48i. In cooperation with ASA Engineering, a world-renowned engineering company and OEM supplier of high-tech superchargers, G-POWER has developed a supercharger system for the eight-cylinder four-valve engine. The G-POWER SK III compressor system increases power output of the 4.8-liter engine by 170 hp / 125 kW to 525 hp / 386 kW at 6,100 rpm and boosts peak torque to 600 Nm at 5,300 rpm, up from 475 Nm. An ASA T1-521 hd supercharger with centrifugal clutch is flanged to the engine using a CNC-milled high-strength mount. The compressor is driven by the crankshaft via a cogged belt. It is lubricated by its own oil circulation integrated into the engine’s oil circulation system. Boost pressure is limited to 0.6 bars. A two-piece carbon-fiber intake manifold with large free-flow cross sections, a generously dimensioned aluminum intercooler in the bow of the X5 and the fully stainless-steel G-POWER SPEEDFLOW high-performance exhaust with racing catalysts and rear muffler comprise the engine peripherals.

The engine itself is also modified extensively by G-POWER: Eight new injectors with higher fuel flow and new mapping for the engine electronics round out the engine conversion. The enormous power of the G-POWER SK III compressor engine in combination with the six-speed automatic gearbox and the xDrive four-wheel drive lend the SUV driving performance that places it squarely at the head of the pack: The powerful five-door sprints from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds and reaches the 200-km/h mark after just 18.4 seconds. Top speed is 275 km/h.

The TYPHOON cockpit can be upgraded with exclusive accessories such as an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel, a TYPHOON-design speedometer and a number of sporty aluminum accessories. Requests for an even more customized interior can be fulfilled with exclusive leather and Alcantara interiors in any color imaginable.

The Germans give this SUV some (more) attitude.

BY JORDAN BROWN

Porsche has announced plans to offer U.S. customers its latest special edition of the Cayenne SUV. Building upon the sporty Cayenne GTS, this is the third Porsche Design Edition in the series—and the first sport-ute—and gets a host of interior and exterior upgrades that have it looking fit for a German Batman.

Sprayed in what Porsche calls Lava Grey Metallic paint and festooned with racing stripes, the DE3 also features color-matched 21-inch wheels, blacked-out bi-xenon headlights, and tinted windows that add to the SUV’s menacing exterior. Also available to customers at no additional charge is an extended roof-mounted spoiler similar to the one found on the Subaru WRX STI. The final exterior flourishes are the Porsche Design Edition 3 graphics on the doors.

Putting a Track pack on the popular pony.

BY AARON ROBINSON

A Mustang with a Track pack? Corvettes and Vipers grab the glory for Old Glory at temples of speed such as Le Mans. The lumbering, log-axle Mustang is just a quarter-miler for the tattoo-and-tobacco crowd, right?

Actually, mes amis, the Mustang is America’s other road-racing workhorse. It has its own pro series, the eight-race Mustang Challenge. And there were more than a dozen Mustangs on the grid at Daytona this past January when a Roush-prepared Mustang finished second in the three-hour Koni Challenge race. It made all its rights and lefts better than Porsche 911s and BMW M3s. [Turnkey Mustang drag cars are featured in this month’s Sport, page 110].

No, we wouldn’t expect that hierarchy to hold on the street, even if the 2010 Track-pack Mustang GT is billed as the hairpin-and-carousel king of the newly reskinned Mustang lineup. Still, Ford’s old pony has a long history of making incremental improvements as it ages, and the Track package shows that the late-night lights still burn in some windows at Ford.

Building a Track-pack Mustang on the order form starts with a GT Premium and its 315-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 and five-speed manual, for $31,845. The $1495 Track package swaps out the 3.31 or 3.55 axle for a 3.73 limited-slip rear end with carbon friction plates. The shocks are less forgiving in both compression and rebound, the anti-roll bars are thicker, and dual-piston front brake calipers with performance pads from the 2009 Bullitt model do the stopping. Also, the stability-control system is retuned to tolerate more sideways play.

Evolution has treated this icon well.

BY JENS MEINERS

We don’t think we’re sucking up too much if we state that Volkswagen’s GTI is the only true icon among compact hatchbacks. It’s been around for 33 years now, and every generation of the Golf has worn the GTI moniker since it first debuted in 1976 as an unlikely engineering project.

The GTI began life as a segment-buster. When it was launched, it was intended to entice cool and trendy urban types who wanted to lay waste to far bigger, far more traditional coupes and family sedans. The GTI did just that, and it was a sensation. The car wasn’t cheap, but it was well-executed and an absolute blast to drive. Whether you lived in Paris, Hamburg, or Milan, you had to have a black GTI. The last-generation GTI was a favorite in our offices, winning three straight 10Best Cars awards.

1990 Honda Civic - Power In Numbers
1990 Honda Civic - Import Tuner Magazine
Check out this 1990 Honda Civic fully equipped with B16 motor, Tein Super Street Kit coilovers and much more!

Hanover, Pennsylvania’s current population is 14,535. Just 54 miles away is Oriole Park at Camden Yards, which seats 48,876 people. The hottest spot in Hanover is The Golden Mile, a shopping center with a Ruby Tuesdays, Starbucks, McDonalds, and Chili’s. You can find all those inside Camden Yards, plus you can also watch the Orioles blow another game, bask under the springtime sun, and pound beers like it was your last day on earth. The point to all of the mathematics is quite simple: Hanover is a freakishly small town, at least to anyone who lives in a big city. So to get noticed nationally as a resident of Hanover is definitely a bigger accomplishment than, say, hitting a homerun at Camden Yards or even streaking the field as a result of one too many beers. The odds are undoubtedly against you.

Corvette Racing Sets Records in Final GT1 Appearance in Sebring 12-Hour Race
Corvette Racing, Sebring

The 57th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring was a history-making event for Corvette Racing. For Johnny O’Connell, it was a record-setting eighth Sebring class victory. For Jan Magnussen, it was his milestone 100th career victory in the American Le Mans Series’ landmark 100th race. For Antonio Garcia, it was his first win with Corvette Racing. And for Corvette Racing, it was a perfect performance that included an ALMS record for laps completed in the GT class at Sebring to jump start the 10th anniversary of America’s premier production sports car racing team.

O’Connell, Magnussen and Garcia completed 349 laps in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R to take a one-lap victory in the GT1 class over Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Marcel Fassler in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R. The Corvettes finished sixth and seventh overall, and the winning car set a record for the most laps completed by a GT car in ALMS competition in America’s most demanding endurance race. The No. 3 Corvette C6.R also won the inaugural Michelin Green X Challenge race-within-a-race with the best score in the GT classes based on performance, efficiency, and environmental impact.

“In our final race in the GT1 class at Sebring, I think we raised the bar high by setting an all-time laps completed record and running a flawless race,” said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “Today was an example of what we’ve done since the inception of this program – continuous improvement. This gives us a solid foundation for going to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and completing our mission over there.”

Gavin started on the GT1 pole with Magnussen in close pursuit. The first round of pit stops at 49 minutes into the race proved decisive. Magnussen pitted first, handing off to O’Connell. One lap later, Gavin pitted and was replaced by Beretta. The two cars emerged from their stops side-by-side, with O’Connell taking the lead for good in Turn 10. The No. 3 Corvette C6.R then held its advantage through 11 long hours of racing and 11 more pit stops.

“I had the advantage of a killer lap going out of the pits,” said O’Connell, who extended his record as the all-time leader in Sebring victories with his eighth career win on the historic circuit. “Maybe our car was a little better in that stint. I came by as Olivier was coming out of the pits on cold tires, so he had knife for a gunfight on that first lap. Anytime you get close dicing like that it’s a lot of fun, and Olivier was pushing me every bit of the way.

“I don’t know why this place has always been special for me, but a lot of it is that I’ve been here with good people,” O’Connell continued. “When you have a race car prepared by Corvette Racing and the support of Chevrolet, this is how you want to start a year. To have won this so many times with Ron Fellows, and now to do it with Jan and Antonio, makes me very excited about the future. Not only did we win the race, we also won the Michelin Green X Challenge, so there is a lot for Chevrolet to be proud of today.”

Magnussen reached a milestone with his 100th career victory. The 35-year-old racer from Denmark has scored wins in single seaters, touring cars, prototypes, and GTs. His resume now includes 23 ALMS victories.

“Winning my 100th race in the 100th ALMS event is perfect,” said Magnussen. “I’m so happy for Johnny, and to welcome Antonio to the team with a win couldn’t be better. We had a nearly perfect race – we didn’t make any mistakes and everything went according to plan. A victory here is the best possible preparation we could have for Le Mans.”

Garcia completed a trio of endurance racing victories after wins in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 2009 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Spaniard notched his first ALMS victory in his debut with Corvette Racing.

“Starting off with a win with my new team, I can’t ask for anything more,” Garcia said. “Everything went perfectly, the team did a magnificent job, and the pit stops were awesome. For me today was a learning race, and I think I achieved everything that I wanted.”

The gap between the two Corvettes was never more than 30 seconds through the long day of racing. Gavin and Magnussen started and finished the race, running five stints, while their teammates each completed four stints.

“It came down to a couple of little things that just didn’t quite work out for us,” Gavin said. “We had some bad luck with the cautions and safety car, and we were a little off on tire pressure or the setup on a few stints. There was really almost no difference in performance between the two Corvette C6.Rs, so it was going to take just one small thing to throw it one way or the other. Unfortunately it didn’t work out our way today, but there’s a lot of positives for us to take away from this. We had a car that was strong and that we all could drive well.”

Beretta agreed: “It was a good race, but we just had some little issues and some bad luck on the pace car,” he said. “Congratulations to the No. 3 Corvette, they did a perfect race. We are leaving Sebring with two cars in perfect condition, and that is the most important thing.”

Marcel Fassler has raced Corvette C6.Rs extensively in Europe, and the Swiss driver was delighted by his first race with the Corvette Racing team. “This gives me confidence going to Le Mans because the car was reliable on a very tough track,” Fassler said. “To finish second is never nice, but the No. 3 Corvette today was a little faster and they did a good job. I congratulate them, and I really look forward to Le Mans.”

Corvette Racing backed up its overall victory in last year’s inaugural ALMS Green Challenge with a win in the first Michelin Green X Challenge at Sebring. Created jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, SAE International and ALMS, the Green X Challenge ranks the competitors on the amount of energy used, greenhouse gases emitted, and petroleum displaced.

“Today’s race was the final appearance by Corvette Racing in the GT1 category at Sebring, and we ran an absolutely perfect race with cellulosic E85 ethanol fuel,” said Steve Wesoloski, GM Racing Road Racing Group manager. “We accomplished our mission and demonstrated Chevrolet’s technical capabilities. This same technology is applied to other vehicles in Chevy’s product line, and that’s what we’re demonstrating every time the Corvettes are on the race track.”

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach in Long Beach, Calif., on April 18.
